Five
hundred delegates from around the world gathered in Seoul, Korea
recently for the Fifth Biennial Conference of the Asia-Pacific Satellite
Communications Council (APSCC). Present were businesspeople, engineers,
regulators and scientists working in the space communications industry.
The APSCC Conference, endorsed by the United Nations Office for Outer
Space Affairs, was designed as a venue for the exchange of views and
ideas on the very latest topics affecting satellite communications.
One
important focus of the Fifth APSCC Conference was the state of
development of so-called "3G" or "Third Generation
Wireless" mobile telecommunications systems. 3G is capturing
widespread interest in view of the significant spectrum harmonization
actions taken by the 2000 World Radiocommunication Conference in
Istanbul, Turkey.
Among
other things, Third Generation wireless promises to afford telecom
subscribers with total mobility in the transmission and reception of
high-speed data (Internet) traffic. A comprehensive Primer and Status
Report on 3G was presented to APSCC delegates by Robert G. Allen,
Director of ITTA’s Telecom Consulting Group.
